How to Clean Patio Furniture
Taking good care of your patio furniture not only keeps it looking nice but also adds to its longevity.
Cleaning Cushions
1. Mix cleaning solution.
There are several cleaning solutions readily available for cleaning outdoor fabrics. You can also find some good solutions on the internet to mix up yourself. Put the solution in a spray bottle if you mix it yourself. If you buy an already-made cleaner it is probably already in a spray bottle.
2. Saturate the cushions.
Don’t be afraid to saturate the cushions on both sides. You want and need to use a lot of solution to clean off mold and mildew. Don’t forget the creases and crevices; mold and mildew can build up in these places.
3. Let solution set.
After saturating the cushions, you should let the solution set for 15 – 20 minutes. Using a garden hose, spray the cushions thoroughly to rinse off all of the solution as well as the dirt. If you come across some stubborn dirt you may need to use a rag with some cleaning solution and scrub it.
4. Drying
When all of the cleaning solution has been rinsed off, stand the cushions up on edge to dry. When they are almost dry, but still just a little damp you’re ready for the next step.
5. Apply Fabric Protector
Using another spray bottle, spray the cushions with a fabric protector. This will not only protect them, but also make them easier to clean the next time. Scotch Guard is a good protector to use but there are other brands that you may prefer.
Plastic and Vinyl Patio Furniture
1. Clean off the big stuff.
Large debris such as leaves, small sticks, mud, and bird droppings should be cleaned off with a dry nylon brush. Then use the garden hose to rinse off the rest of the dirt.
2. Wiping it down.
Warm soapy water works fine on this type of material. Use a rag to wipe down all of the furniture and then scrub with the nylon brush if necessary.
3. Rinse and dry.
Thoroughly rinse off all of the soap and let the furniture sit to dry. Your furniture should be nice and clean and ready to use.
Aluminum and Steel Furniture
To clean and shine up your metal furniture a mixing a 1-to-1 solution of vinegar and water works great and will keep the metal from tarnishing in the elements.
Wood Furniture
You will need a soft bristle brush, commercial wood cleaner, water, and some rubber gloves.
1. After putting on your rubber gloves, use the soft brush and follow the instructions on the wood cleaner to clean your natural wood furniture.
2. Rinse well with water and let your furniture air dry.
Wicker and Painted Wood Furniture
A mild detergent will work well for these types. You should always do a small test spot to make sure the detergent isn’t going to remove the paint. If this happens a diluted wood cleaner will work.
1. After washing your furniture you may need to use a soft bristle brush to remove stubborn spots.
2. Rinse thoroughly and let your furniture air dry.
You can also find a lot of tips and tricks on the internet for cleaning all types of furniture. Some may work better than others, but you’re sure to come up with something that you like.
